A Panchayat is a body of elected representatives constituted to manage the administrative affairs of Panchayati Raj Institutions. As far as a Grama Panchayat is concerned, it is the primary committee that implements the decisions of the Grama Sabha and carries out day-to-day governance.The main components of a Panchayat are:President: The head of the Panchayat. Presides over meetings and supervises the overall activities of the Panchayat.Vice President: Performs duties in the absence of the President.Ward Members: Elected representatives chosen from each ward of the Panchayat.Standing Committees: Sub-committees formed to ease decision-making in areas such as Finance, Development, Welfare, Health, and Education.

History of Grama Panchayat

Kanjirappally, which was historically part of Greater Tamilakam, served as a crucial segment of the trade route connecting Madurai, Cumbum, Gudalur, Nilakkal, and Erumely to the ports of Kerala for nearly one and a half millennia. Toponymic evidence (place names) suggests that during the Sangam period (1st to 5th century AD) and for about a thousand years thereafter, the region was inhabited by mixed ethnic groups of Australoid, Negritoid, and Dravidian origins who practiced Buddhism and Jainism. Place names pointing to 'gold' evidence the veneration of the Golden Buddha here. In ancient records, Kanjirappally was known as Kanjanappally.
